The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates the average (across different products and industries) recycling rate to be 32.5 percent. What happens to the remaining non-recycled waste? According to the EPA, 12.5 percent is burned in incineration facilities (spewing hazardous emissions to the atmosphere) while the remaining 55 percent (well over half of the estimated 251 million tons of solid waste produced in a year) is deposited in landfills across the country. Clearly, there is a room for recycling to grow in this country.

Why Recycle?

Recycled paper supplies more than 37% of the raw materials used to make new paper products in the U.S. Without recycling, this material would come from trees. Every ton of newsprint or mixed paper recycled is the equivalent of 12 trees. Every ton of office paper recycled is the equivalent of 24 trees.
