Tracking a Recycling Program

When a business begins a recycling program, the decision is usually spurred in part by one or more of the following factors:

  1. A relatively large portion of a company’s waste stream is composed of recyclable material that could bring in revenue or reduce waste cost when processed in an efficient manner.
  2. Waste costs are increasing with combined hauling and landfill fees.
  3. A business has green initiatives and wants a recycling program to be the hub of various sustainable goals throughout the workplace.

These factors require a call-to-action, and after a recycling company is consulted to help initiate and maintain a customized service, the process begins.

The question is, after weeks, months, and years of managing a recycling program, are you able to keep track of the volume of material your business is recycling, the types of commodities you're generating, the prices of those commodities (prices will vary month to month due to the ebb and flow of the commodity market), and the costs associated with your program?

These are important pieces of information to track for several reasons: Tracking Chart

  • Knowing how much waste and/or recycling your business currently generates compared to how much it has generated in the past could indicate important changes in your company’s processes. Just like looking inside someone’s trash bin tells you a lot about their habits, looking at a business’s waste stream uncovers important information about operations.
  • Many companies are required to report their recycling numbers at the end of the year. Being able to easily track this data on a consistent basis makes this reporting easy.
  • When your business evaluates programs to measure profitability, you have all the information readily available for a quick preparation of statistics.

Does your recycling partner make data tracking easy for you to access? Are they transparent about your program’s progress, and are they keeping you informed?

Public sector investment in local recycling programs pays great dividends by creating private sector jobs. For every job collecting recyclables, there are 26 jobs in processing the materials and manufacturing them into new products.
