Each day is special for a number of reasons, and November 15th is no exception! Historic events that occurred on November 15th include the release of Batman on video tape in 1989, the first regularly scheduled flight over the North Pole in 1954, and the 68th U.S. manned space mission (Atlantis 7) launching into orbit in 1990.

And it gets better!

On November 15th, 1997, America Recycles Day was created! This is the first nationally recognized holiday that's dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle and purchase recycled products.

Does recycling really make a difference?

If you've ever wondered if recycling is really worth the effort, the National Recycling Coalition takes a look at recycling's economic impact.

According to their findings, the American recycling and reuse industry is a $200 billion dollar enterprise that includes:

  • More than 50,000 recycling and reuse establishments
  • Sustains 1.1 million jobs directly connected to recycling
  • Creates 1.5 million jobs indirectly related to recycling
  • Generates an annual payroll of approximately $37 billion

Don't forget, there are other benefits of recycling for residents and business owners alike!

Have a great America Recycles Day everyone!

Well-designed programs save money. Communities have many options available to make their programs more cost-effective, including maximizing their recycling rates, implementing pay-as-you-throw programs, and including incentives in waste management contracts that encourage disposal companies to recycle more and dispose of less.
