Fun with Recycling

Are you looking for activities to keep the kids busy during the last few weeks of summer vacation? Especially on those rainy days when everyone is stuck inside?

Maybe we can help!

Here’s an activity that’s both fun and educational. The only things that you’ll need are recyclable materials, a scale, and Midwest Fiber’s environmental calculator.

Step 1: Find recyclable materials around the house (paper, plastic bottles, metal cans, etc…). If there is plenty of material in the recycle bin, that will make the first step easy.

Step 2: Weigh the materials. You can either weigh everything separately, and record the weights for each commodity, or weigh the material together, and label it as single-stream.

Step 3: Once you have weighed the recyclables and recorded the weights, you’re ready to find the environmental impact of recycling those materials!

Step 4: Go to our environmental calculator.

Step 5: Enter your material weights into the corresponding categories, and click the gray calculate button at the bottom. (Where it asks for a company name at the top, you can make up a fun team name for your group).

And then, voila! You can see how many trees, gallons of oil, landfill space, and more that would be saved by recycling that amount of material.

If you have any questions about recycling, or this activity, we are always happy to answer questions!

Have fun!

Mining is the world's most deadly occupation. On average, 40 mine workers are killed on the job each day, and many more are injured. Recycling reduces the need for mining.
